The Philippines have been in the news lately when certain
provincial mayors publicly declared they will be fighting and
putting an end to online gambling in the Philippines. The
first of these mayors to take action was JV Ejercito, who also
happens to be the son of Joseph Estrada, past president of the
Philippines.
Ejercito recently pulled a permit from E-Casino Filipino,
which was operating out of two locations: Pasiq City and San
Juan. This was a bold move, considering the Philippine
government openly supports the online casino gaming industry,
in addition to the large capital E-Casino Filipino was
bringing in.
Ejercito has already laid out punishments to anyone else
who tries to run an online casino in the region he governs. As
of yet, the current president of the Philippines, Arroyo, has
not made a statement regarding Ejercito’s actions. The way it
stands now, online casino gambling is not illegal in all of
the Philippines, nor does it look like it will be. In what
many would say appears to be a micro-dictatorship, regional
governors are making the call based on their own personal
feelings without consulting a larger governing body.
