Tainted Online Gambling Research?
It may come as no surprise to some that portions of taxable
gambling revenue are going towards research aimed at helping
pathological gamblers. However, it may come as a surprise that
Harvard University Medical School, who is largely responsible
for conducting the research, has been accused of purposefully
tainting its research due to pressure from gambling lobbyists.
The recent allegations have come from online casino and
gambling oppositions in general, claiming that proponents for
gambling are steadily using the findings from the research to
show that widespread gambling does not cause problems, which
they are doing so with a strong argument.
For instance, Harvard’s findings claim that only 1.14% of
American adults are pathological gamblers, which casino
lobbyists used to argue their defense for gambling. However,
these same lobbyists neglected to mention broader aspects of
the Harvard research, which include findings that 20% of
adults were at risk of becoming pathological gamblers and that
the number of pathological gamblers has doubled since 1977.
The Harvard Medical Institute’s Director, Howard Shaffer
points to the above claims in defense of Harvard’s research.
His defense is that the research is not being divulged without
bias – And it is not up to Harvard how their research is
shared in the community once it is made publicly available.
It should be obvious that Harvard is in no need for funding
its research. However, Methodist Reverend Tom Grey claims
Harvard is being bought out, perhaps on an individual basis.
To him, it’s not just how the research is being divulged – The
National Coalition Against Legalized Gambling claims the
numbers don’t add up. But until they can prove otherwise, the
research, which is reviewed by independent scientists will
stand as accurate.
