Netherlands Bans Online Casino Gambling Site
The Netherlands has never really been one to cause a stir,
especially in way that is biased or nonsensical. But this is
exactly how the online casino, Ladbrokes, is feeling these
days. In a ruling by the Dutch Supreme Court, the casino was
ordered to immediately cease offering and taking bets from
Dutch players.
Since online gambling, or any form of gambling at that, is
heavily regulated by the Dutch government in a way that
requires casino profit percentages to be donated to charities,
the court upheld the previous ruling by a lower Dutch Court
that Ladbrokes was in violation of Dutch law and must stop
taking wagers from Dutch citizens. Moreover, the ruling
included an order to cease taking bets from any computer with
a Dutch IP address, which Ladbrokes claims is unfair, because
there are consumers who use a Dutch IP address but who live
beyond the countries borders.
The court battle started when the Dutch government owned De
Lotto, who pays out to charity organizations according to
betting regulations, accused Ladbrokes of running an illegal
online casino gambling site. Now, the rulings are expected to
affect the operations of BetFair and Interwetten, who both
currently take wagers from Dutch players, but who do so in the
same "illegal" manner as Ladbrokes.
