In a lawsuit started by two gamblers, Michael Voight and
Mario Cisneros, in which the pair claimed they each
individually lost significant amounts of money gambling at
search engine sponsored casinos, a California judge ruled that
the case would not be dismissed.
Of the search engines targeted in the suit, Google and
Yahoo are the most highly profiled, with a total of ten
accused search engines altogether. The suit itself is
validated by the U.S. government's crackdown on search engines
who advertise for online casino gambling websites. In
the recent past it was agreed upon that the major search
engines would meet the government's demand. However, the
lawsuit claims that websites were still being advertised by
the search engine's pay-per-click system, which charges
website owners - in this case, online casino owners - for
every click brought to the website through the search engine.
A spokesperson for Google stated the company no longer
takes payments from online gambling sites, but only display's
casino gambling websites in its normal search engine results,
which has not been deemed illegal.
