Online Casino Crackdown in Taiwan
In Beijing, online casino gambling is not looked upon with
a smile by government officials. In an investigation which
lasted almost a year, the Beijing police nabbed an estimated
600 people throughout the China mainland, seemingly putting an
end to an underground online gambling ring that had brought in
an estimated US$60.5 million.
The biggest blow fell upon the Taiwanese company, Baoying,
which was conspiring with land-based criminals to bring the
online casinos to players since March. And now some 600 people
have been caught, including many government officials. All in
all, approximately 400 organizers were helping to spread the
gambling epidemic, while another 200 individuals were caught
betting online.
Most of the wagering took place at casinos with the
pseudonym "888" in the web address. A large portion of the
gambling was done at any online casino offering sports betting
on European soccer matches, mainly in England and Italy.
Seizures from the conspiracy have accumulated to almost
US$3 million, while an estimated $133 million had been gambled
from a Beijing home run by a man named Gu. This latest bust
included the confiscation of some seven computers and prompted
the Beijing police to release the news of a large-scale online
casino ring coming to an end.
