Gambling for Human Resources

Rep. Jim McDermott has proposed a new bill entitled “Investing in our Human Resources Act of 2008 (H.R. 6501)”. The goal of this legislation is to provide up to $40 billion worth of care for foster children over the next decade. The way that he proposes to do this is by regulating and taxing the online casino industry.

McDermott says, “We have an ideal opportunity to invest billions of dollars in American workers and our struggling economy without increasing the federal deficit. IHRA would utilize a funding stream that would become available should Congress decide to legalize and regulate internet gambling, which would protect consumers and collect tax revenue that is currently offshore.”

Another goal with this bill would be to promote responsible and safe gambling practices among online casino members. Keith Whyte, Executive Director of the National Council on Problem Gambling, says, “I believe that the McDermott bill could be a positive step to help raise awareness about the dangers of unsafe gambling practices and the availability of addiction treatment.”
