US
Legislation Tries to Facilitate Online Gambling
Although
online gambling is anything but legal for US citizens,
American bettors account for the largest percentage of online
gamblers. This is why the irony and seeming contradictions of
online betting in the US are starting to raise the eyebrows of
more than just the Senators. The Nevada Gaming Board is one
such group doing what it can to protect American bettors,
rather than persecute them. Recently, the state of Nevada
passed legislation with its own state assembly that laid forth
plans to regulate, monitor and tax online casinos and other
gambling operations on the Web and based from within state
boundaries. Bill 444 is a recent introduction into the US
Senate - that if passed - would allow gambling establishments
to charge admission fees to online bettors, thus protecting
players in the long run. By doing so, only screened gaming
licensees could take part, thereby preventing many of the
fly-by-night online casino sites of robbing player’s blind.
These days,
says Bobby Siller (Nevada Gaming Board member), some offshore
online casinos are targeting US gamblers in an attempt to open
accounts and then close up shop once players have deposited
money. If online gambling is illegal for US citizens, the
chances for players to get their money back are few and slim
according to Siller. This is one reason why
Nevada
is seeking to facilitate online casino gambling. There seems
to be nothing that can stop American’s from online gambling,
seeing that the internet is an international mode of commerce,
and that there are such a large number of those who partake in
the activity.
There are
other circumstances which seem to contradict the US
government’s stance on online betting and gambling in
general. For instance, online gambling is illegal, yet
placing online bets on horse races is legal – depending on the
State. For many lawmakers, this inconsistency is making
matters worse, only fueling the call for a homogenized stance
on online gambling even louder. And with the newly proposed
gambling legislation – that in many ways resembles the UK
Gambling Bill – US players may feel a little more secure when
putting their money at risk on the internet.
