Online Casino "Juice"
Unlike regular
casino gambling, gamblers do not bet against a casino when
placing a wager on a particular sports game. The reason
is because sporting games are independent events - just like
the prelude coin toss at the beginning of a football game.
In other words, there is no probability theory governing the
outcome of a sports wager, consequently canceling any casino
advantage, or player advantage for that matter.
So, how does an
online casino earn its keep in the world of sports betting?
Well, it's all in the vig. Vigorish, commonly called vig
or juice, is the commission that a sportsbook earns on all
bets. This commission, which is universally accepted for
the most part at 10%, consequently pays out 10 to 11 odds.
A common number posted on sportsbook betting boards is 110,
which is another way of proposing that a gambler must bet $110
in order to win $100. You got it - 10:11 odds.
Whether a sports gambler wins or loses, the online casino will
get its commission. For instance, if two gamblers both
place $110 bets on opposite teams in a hockey game, the casino
will earn a profit of $10. Although the casino loses
$100 to the winning bettor, it keeps $110 from the losing
bettor.
It is safe to
say the casinos commission corresponds to somewhat of a House
Edge. In order to come out on top, a gambler must win
eleven times out of twenty-one bets, equating to a 52.5%
winning streak. At an average of 4.5% Casino Advantage,
this may not sound too promising for the avid sports gambler,
as opposed to the occasional gambler. However, when
examined on a cost-per-hour basis, the losses do not stack up
like they can at the card table in an online casino -
Remember, most sports games are at least two hours long!
